The Origins of Brunch – America’s Favorite Meal

If you have been living under a rock, Brunch is a combination of lunch and breakfast that is usually served in the late morning to early afternoon. Generally, served between the hours of 10am-3pm and coupled with various alcoholic beverages but mainly mimosas (Champagne and Orange Juice), Bellinis (Champagne and Peach puree) or Bloody Marys (Vodka, Tomato Juice, and various other spices and flavorings).

Sunday Brunch became so popular by the Saturday night partiers looking to get a late breakfast and a little Hair of the dog to cut into their brutal hangovers. Brunch began in England in the 19th Century for this reason, and by the late 1930s was popular in the United States as well. Since then, brunch has become an American institution.

In replacement of England’s post-church early dinner with heavy meats and delicious pies, the British opted to switch the phenomenon known as Brunch. Heavy meals were replaced with a lighter breakfast fare and the need for people to get up early diminished making Saturday night debauchery a necessary evil. Thanksgiving is the precursor for the Holiday season ahead. Many people tend to slow down their partying as their disposable income shifts from nights out on the town to saving up to buy that perfect present for your niece, nephew, or significant other. The typical awakening comes on New Year’s Eve when your wallet is a little more padded from Grandma’s annual cash card.

Thanksgiving Eve is the perfect storm. Many people return home for the long weekend and this has become the night where a reunion just naturally happens. Some people choose their hometown bar while others choose to reunite at bars and nightclubs throughout Philadelphia.

We wanted to give you our insight on some ideas of how we would plan the perfect Thanksgiving Eve night out.

Plan an Epic Thanksgiving Eve Pregame

Pregaming has become a right of passage. But the perfect pregame takes some plan, organize, and execute.

Step 1: Picking the perfect location.
The perfect location involves a little thought and planning. Here are some points to consider.

• A Host willing to offer their space for the pregame.
• Central location that is walking distance to the final destination. (Uber/Lyft can solve this dilemma but it’s always easier to be in walking distance to your final destination)
• Finding a place that is big enough to accommodate your guest list.
• If you have the options of a house over an apartment choose a house as neighbors won’t be as big of an issue.
• Find a place with an outdoor area that is accessible from the house or apartment. This will help accommodate smokers and using the space as a free cooler for beers, mixers, and ice.

Step 2: Creating the perfect Guest List.
This is probably the most crucial component to planning the perfect pregame. The guests make the party and you are inviting people into you or your friend’s house. You want to make sure that you know who’s coming into your place. Maybe you have a Rolex your grandmother or grandfather gave you or heirloom jewelry that are invaluable to you. Make sure you secure all valuables. People do stupid things when they are drunk. Those items all become at risk when you open the guest list to people that you don’t know. Say if you invite the friend that can’t hold their liquor and they start a fight with their ex. That’s no fun for anyone! Here are a few ways you can easily invite your guests.

Step 3: Getting your shopping list together.
You can ask your guests to bring a bottle to help with the cost of the alcohol but it is important that you provide the appropriate mixers. Here is a little guide for the perfectly stocked pregame bar. Vodka and beer are the most commonly sought after beverages so adjust accordingly if you decide not to get some the alcohol listed. You can get about 18 drinks per bottle. A bottle of champagne will pour between 6-8 glasses. A bottle of wine will fill 5 glasses. Most cases of champagne and wine come in 12 bottles increments. A case of beer typically comes in counts of 12, 15, 24, and 30. For the chart below we are using cases size of 24 beers. We suggest getting cans over bottles of beer because you will save room for trash removal over glass since the cans can be crushed. Most of your guests will average about 3-4 drinks per person. Don’t forget to have a separate receptacle for recyclables! Pregaming creates a lot of trash and it’s easy to be eco-friendly with a little planning.

Step 4: Plan the Perfect Pregame Playlist
Time to get the atmosphere right and it all begins with the music. It is important to create a nice playlist in advance to keep the party vibing. You want to make sure you pick music that is multi-genre, not only what you want to hear. Afterall a good host is someone that is catering to the needs of their guests. Here are some suggestions to create a party playlist that will keep the pregame going.

Step 5: Damage Control
Now it’s the next morning and you most likely have a massive hangover, it’s damage control time. You need to see what damaged, dirty, left behind from your friends. Most likely your apartment or house are a disaster and you are left to clean up the mess. Here are some tips to help with mess.

• If you have hardwood floors consider everyone taking off their shoes.- Why you may ask. Socks are like Swiffers and if someone spills a drink they are going to have to clean it up or people will have wet feet!
• Have large trash and recycling receptacles ready. It’s a good idea to multiple trash and recycling receptacles if you plan on having more than 25 people.
• Choose aluminum cans over glass or bottles because you can crush the cans to save space on trash.
• Have a few of your close friends stay behind and clean-up for 15 minutes before you head to the bar or nightclub. Multiple hands will always make clean-up go a little faster.
• Rubber gloves are a hand’s best friend when it comes to cleaning your bathroom. People tend to have horrible aim when they are drunk.

What is Made in America Festival in Philadelphia?

The unofficial conclusion of summer in Philadelphia revolves around Made in America festival in Philadelphia. For the past seven years, Made in America Festival has been a Philadelphia staple hosted on Philadelphia’s Ben Franklin Parkway. Produced through a collaboration by Roc Nation and Live Nation.

In 2014, Made in America Festival was hosted simultaneously in Los Angeles and Philadelphia but Philly proved to be the true home of the Made In America Festival. Los Angeles hosted an offshoot of the Festival in Grand Park. The festival was supposed to bring an economic injection of capital to the city of Los Angeles. Unfortunately, Made in America in Los Angeles failed to produce the ticket sales it hoped and had a one year run on the West Coast. This annual festival hosts some of the largest acts in music curated through the relationships of festival founder and hip-hop legend Jay-Z. This multi-genre festival hosts some of the largest names in hip-hop, R&B, EDM, and Pop music.

Cause Village is the philathrophic initiative and hub for social action. This year in 2019, Cause Village will feature art that speaks to criminal justice reform, youth development, animal rights, and more. Local artists can submit their eight foot tall sign to be displayed as the centerpiece of this art installation promoting social change.

Founded in 2012 by hip-hop superstar Jay-Z, Made in America was able to attract over 80,000 patrons on its inaugural event grossing over $5 Million in ticket sales and generating nearly $10 million in economic impact in the host city of Philadelphia. The highlight of the inaugural event was a co-performance of Jay-Z’s hit single “99 Problems” with rock legends Pearl Jam. In 2015, Made in America sold out with record-breaking crowds of 140,000 tickets sold with 64,000 of those patrons attending both days of the Made in America Festival.

Made in America Festival has expanded from three stages to five stages in 2018. With the scenic backdrop of the Philadelphia Art Museum, Made in America is one of the most unique festival locations of any domestic multi-day music festival in the country. The festival spans over 2 days and features a wide breadth of local vendors servicing the 100,000 plus annual patrons that Made in America Festival hosts every summer.

Why Does Happy Hour Exist?

In fact, the notion of happy hour began back in the 19th century out at sea. It was to describe the entertainment period in which activities such as boxing and wrestling matches would occur on board the naval ships. This was a time for the seamen to get their minds off the hardships of war.

During the era of prohibition in the 1920s happy hour was used as “a euphemism for drinking sessions ahead of dinner in public restaurants were serving alcohol was illegal.”

Today we look at things a little differently for happy hour, it’s quite mainstreamed and it seems like every bar in America has one.

Some people today especially during the age of the millennials, utilize happy hours as their only time to go out, it’s cheaper, most places have a great atmosphere, and it’s usually earlier right after work lets out. There are a few things people look for first when it comes to choosing their favorite happy hour spot.

1. Break up your stale week, grabbing a few cheap drinks might break up the monotony of your week.
2. Keep your everyday commuter out of the rush hour. Cities like Philadelphia can be a struggle leaving around 5pm with tens of thousands of people trying to get back home from work. Grabbing a couple of drinks while rush hour ends might just be your best bet.
3. Try new things, sometimes it’s great to be able to go to a place you’ve never been before, check out the cocktails that are on the happy hour menu, usually they’re cheaper than normal. Try to step out of your comfort zone and try new things on special.

Why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

Ever wonder why we celebrate St Patrick’s Day every year besides the obvious of excuse of getting together with some friends for an excuse to day drink? Typically celebrated on or around March 17th, St. Patrick’s day is a cultural and religious celebration commemorating the death of Saint Patrick, Ireland’s most famous saint of the Catholic church.

Saint Patrick was an Irish bishop and Christian missionary. Known as the “Apostle of Ireland”, Saint Patrick was the primary saint of Ireland from the fifth century. Folklore and legends chronicle a tale of Saint Patrick teaching the Irish about the holy doctrine through the use of the shamrock to describe the holy trinity. Legend also has Saint Patrick banishing all snakes from Ireland. Over time, symbols such as shamrocks and vibrant displays of the color green have become intertwined with the legend of Saint Patrick and have become synonymous with Irish culture.

St. Patrick’s day has grown to become an even larger celebration in North America than it is in Ireland. People gather from all walks of life wearing green clothing and adorned in shamrocks or green accessories. The St. Patrick Day parades actual started in North America in the 18th century and eventually spread into Ireland but not until the 20th century. There has been plenty of speculation as to the origin and meaning of the shamrock. Some believe it is a representation of the holy trinity to Irish pagans.

The association of the color green came apart of Irish mythology where Moses placed his staff on the snakebite of Goídel Glas, leaving a green mark that would stay with him as he leads his people to a land that would be free of snakes. Evidence of the St. Patrick’s day celebrations and the color green date back to the 1600s when people were evidenced wearing green ribbons and shamrocks.

St Patrick’s Day is not a legal holiday in the United States, however St. Patrick’s Day is widely recognized and observed throughout the country to celebrate Irish and Irish-American culture. Celebrations are typically observed through parades, religious observances, prominent displays of the color green, and copious amounts of alcohol consumption. St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated in the United States since the 18th century.

For 30+ Years the Erin Express has be St. Patty’s Day bar crawl in Philadelphia. From the minds of the owners of Cavanaugh’s and Smokey Joe’s in University City. For 2 consecutive weekends surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, ten buses make loops around University City and Center City Bars. Buses run from 11am -6pm and take spot at participating bars. The concept seems simple the Erin Express has been a very popular event that has gained notoriety over the years. The buses are school buses that make a loop around the city dropping you off at many of the local Irish bars.

The Erin Express tends to attract a younger clientele due to its free nature and focus on the University City Bars. Typically those are the busiest locations as well because even tho the bus seems like fun to ride most of the people end up in University City at the college bars. Every year they incorporate sponsorship too for discount drinks on specific brands.

If you are looking for a no-frills bar hop, this is certainly the bar crawl choice of many young Philadelphians.

St. Patty’s Day Hack: Most of the bars on the list do not charge cover and allow access to all patrons. If you are not planning on taking advantage of the drink specials or coupon book to point where the savings do not match the ticket price you will be better off just heading to the bars you want to go to. Every bar in the city is running drink specials regardless if you purchase the wristband or not. You will also have to head into a check-in location which may take time depending on what time you show up. If you are going to take advantage of the coupon book, swag, and drink specials on available with the wristband then the ticket will be worth it.

The Shamrock Crawl offers no cover charges at all participating locations. Every locations entertainment will be based on what they choose to program, green swag, drink specials (12pm-6pm) from sponsors, map, and coupon book. 50+ locations are participating in the bar crawl but most are open to the public with no cover charge. Many bars participate in several different St. Patty’s Bar Crawls. Bars located throughout Center City, Manayunk, Old City, South Street, Fishtown, Northern Liberties, and University are participating in the bar crawl.
