The History of New Year’s Eve

The earliest recorded New Year’s celebration is thought to be in Mesopotamia around 4000 years ago. While the celebrations actually occurred in March during the vernal equinox as this was considered the start of the new year by the calendar at the time. an eleven-day festival was held that would probably put our current parties to shame.

Today we celebrate in the New Year in January due in part to the emperor Julius Caesar The Ancient Roman calendar used to follow the lunar cycle and had the new year beginning in March but over the centuries, the calendar fell out of sync with the sun, and in 46 B.C. the emperor Julius Caesar decided to solve the problem by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of his time.

Sosigenes, an astronomer convinced Julius Caesar to follow the solar year, instead. He introduced the Julian calendar, which closely resembles the more modern Gregorian calendar that most countries around the world use today.

Starting the new year in January was partially done to honor the god Janus, for whom the month was named. Since Janus had two faces, he was able to look back into the past and forward into the future simultaneously, making him a great spokesperson for the holiday we celebrate today.

Romans celebrated by offering sacrifices to Janus, exchanging gifts with one another, decorating their homes with laurel branches and attending raucous parties.

In medieval Europe, Christian leaders temporarily replaced January 1 as the first of the year with days carrying more religious significance, such as December 25 (the anniversary of Jesus’ birth) and March 25 (the Feast of the Annunciation); Pope Gregory XIII re-established January 1 as New Year’s Day in 1582.

The Origins of Brunch – America’s Favorite Meal

If you have been living under a rock, Brunch is a combination of lunch and breakfast that is usually served in the late morning to early afternoon. Generally, served between the hours of 10am-3pm and coupled with various alcoholic beverages but mainly mimosas (Champagne and Orange Juice), Bellinis (Champagne and Peach puree) or Bloody Marys (Vodka, Tomato Juice, and various other spices and flavorings).

Sunday Brunch became so popular by the Saturday night partiers looking to get a late breakfast and a little Hair of the dog to cut into their brutal hangovers. Brunch began in England in the 19th Century for this reason, and by the late 1930s was popular in the United States as well. Since then, brunch has become an American institution.

In replacement of England’s post-church early dinner with heavy meats and delicious pies, the British opted to switch the phenomenon known as Brunch. Thanksgiving Eve is the perfect storm. Many people return home for the long weekend and this has become the night where a reunion just naturally happens. Some people choose their hometown bar while others choose to reunite at bars and nightclubs throughout Philadelphia.

We wanted to give you our insight on some ideas of how we would plan the perfect Thanksgiving Eve night out.

Plan an Epic Thanksgiving Eve Pregame

Pregaming has become a right of passage. But the perfect pregame takes some plan, organize, and execute.

Step 1: Picking the perfect location.
The perfect location involves a little thought and planning. Here are some points to consider.

• A Host willing to offer their space for the pregame.
• Central location that is walking distance to the final destination. (Uber/Lyft can solve this dilemma but it’s always easier to be in walking distance to your final destination)
• Finding a place that is big enough to accommodate your guest list.
• If you have the options of a house over an apartment choose a house as neighbors won’t be as big of an issue.
• Find a place with an outdoor area that is accessible from the house or apartment. This will help accommodate smokers and using the space as a free cooler for beers, mixers, and ice.

Step 2: Creating the perfect Guest List.
This is probably the most crucial component to planning the perfect pregame. The guests make the party and you are inviting people into you or your friend’s house. You want to make sure that you know who’s coming into your place. Maybe you have a Rolex your grandmother or grandfather gave you or heirloom jewelry that are invaluable to you. Make sure you secure all valuables. People do stupid things when they are drunk. Those items all become at risk when you open the guest list to people that you don’t know. Say if you invite the friend that can’t hold their liquor and they start a fight with their ex. That’s no fun for anyone! Here are a few ways you can easily invite your guests.

Step 3: Getting your shopping list together.
You can ask your guests to bring a bottle to help with the cost of the alcohol but it is important that you provide the appropriate mixers. Here is a little guide for the perfectly stocked pregame bar. Vodka and beer are the most commonly sought after beverages so adjust accordingly if you decide not to get some the alcohol listed. You can get about 18 drinks per bottle. A bottle of champagne will pour between 6-8 glasses. A bottle of wine will fill 5 glasses. Most cases of champagne and wine come in 12 bottles increments. A case of beer typically comes in counts of 12, 15, 24, and 30. For the chart below we are using cases size of 24 beers. We suggest getting cans over bottles of beer because you will save room for trash removal over glass since the cans can be crushed. Most of your guests will average about 3-4 drinks per person. Don’t forget to have a separate receptacle for recyclables! Pregaming creates a lot of trash and it’s easy to be eco-friendly with a little planning.

Step 4: Plan the Perfect Pregame Playlist
Time to get the atmosphere right and it all begins with the music. It is important to create a nice playlist in advance to keep the party vibing. You want to make sure you pick music that is multi-genre, not only what you want to hear. Afterall a good host is someone that is catering to the needs of their guests. Here are some suggestions to create a party playlist that will keep the pregame going.

• Spotify
• Soundcloud (Pick your favorite DJs mixtape)
• Pandora
• Slacker Radio

Step 5: Damage Control
Now it’s the next morning and you most likely have a massive hangover, it’s damage control time. You need to see what damaged, dirty, left behind from your friends. Most likely your apartment or house are a disaster and you are left to clean up the mess. Here are some tips to help with mess.

• If you have hardwood floors consider everyone taking off their shoes.- Why you may ask. Socks are like Swiffers and if someone spills a drink they are going to have to clean it up or people will have wet feet!
• Have large trash and recycling receptacles ready. It’s a good idea to multiple trash and recycling receptacles if you plan on having more than 25 people.
• Choose aluminum cans over glass or bottles because you can crush the cans to save space on trash.
• Have a few of your close friends stay behind and clean-up for 15 minutes before you head to the bar or nightclub. Multiple hands will always make clean-up go a little faster.
• Rubber gloves are a hand’s best friend when it comes to cleaning your bathroom. People tend to have horrible aim when they are drunk.

Bar Crawls are abundant, this Halloween Season each touting better deals and specials than the next. Just be careful when you choose your bar crawl. You probably think that being stuck at one venue all night seems like a bad idea but sometimes the savings on cover and drink specials don’t really add up to the cost of the ticket.

Most of the venues are open to the public regardless of being included in the bar crawl so make sure the savings are greater than the actual price of the ticket price. Many bars give preference to their paying customers over the bar crawl patrons as most participating bars do not have a representative onsite at each location. Only at registrations points during the registration times will you come in contact with the organizers’ staff.

Most of the time they are subcontractors hired just for the event so they are not invested in the product. You are at the mercy of the bars to honor the drink special and free entry. The organizer is very important in your decision. You need to make sure you choose a reputable company. You really have no platform to voice your issues with the bar crawl.

They happen once a year and there are no ways to leave a negative review because there is no physical location of the bar crawl. Many bars participate in multiple bars crawls to ensure traffic to their venue but they are usually spots that aren’t traditionally popular. Why would a popular venue give away drink specials and cover charges if they are already busy? Do your research and choose your bar crawl wisely.

Ever wonder about the origins of Halloween? Halloween is observed in many countries around the world on October 31st the eve of the Western Christian Feast of All Hallows’ Day, the time dedicated for remembering the dead, specifically saints (hallows), the faithfully departed, and martyrs

In Christian religious observances of Halloween include lighting candles on the graves of the dead and attending church services. However, the commercialization of Halloween includes activities such as trick-or-treating, visiting haunted attractions, carving pumpkins, and copious amounts of drinking alcohol at costume parties.

Over time symbols have become deeply ingrained in Halloween subculture. The Jack-o-lantern is an iconic symbol associated with Halloween in the United States since the 19th century.

According to folklore, Jack was a soul that was caught between heaven and hell. According to the legend, after a long night of drinking Jack encounters the devil on the walk home and tricks him to climb in a tree. Jack draws a cross on the bark trapping the devil in the tree. The devil throws coal from hell at Jack and he places then coal in a hollowed-out turnip to keep him warm on the walk home. Jack makes a deal with the devil to release him if agrees to not claim his soul at the gates of hell when he dies. After a life of sin Jack’s soul was refused at the gates of heaven and hell. Jack uses the Jack-o-lantern made from the hollowed turnip and the coal from hell to search for a place to rest his soul.

International and domestic flights are easy to find and Philadelphia is accessible by train, car, and bus from cities all along the East Coast. Located only 2 hours from New York City, 90 minutes from Baltimore, 2.5 hours from Washington DC, make Philadelphia a very accessible location for group.

The invitation list should come directly from the bride herself. Obviously additions to her guest list can be suggested to the bride but you don’t want to bear the burden of inviting someone that the bride does not like or someone that is a bad drunk and can ruin everyone’s experience. We all have that one friend that seems to take it a little too far and you don’t want to be the one inviting the girl that you are carrying out of the bar at midnight or looking for the disappearing single friend that is jealous that her friend is marrying the perfect man and she can’t find a match on Tinder.

Step 3: Communication is key

As stated above, it is the responsibility of the bride to cover her own travel expense and lodging. Outside of that, the guests and maid of honor should cover the expenses during the Bachelorette Party. If the bride wants to buy a round of shots for the Bachelorette party to show her gratitude, there nothing wrong with that. Afterall, planning a bachelorette party takes a lot of time, effort, and money. It’s all about having a good time and what better way to accomplish that with a few celebratory shots!

Obviously you don’t want to be that annoying group that puts down 15 different credit cards at dinner. It is usually best to designate a few people to pay for the bill on their credit card and have the other guests pay them back. 3. Avoid Driving into the city where parking can cost upwards of $40 a day.
• Coming from South Jersey. Park your car near a PATCO station and take the high speed line directly into Center City. Uber, Lyft, or Taxis are readily available.
• Coming from the PA suburbs. SEPTA regional rails are available every hour from virtually every Philly suburb.
• Coming from NY or DC. Amtrak offers rail service directly to 30th Street Station. Boltbus, Megabus, and Greyhound offer another economical option to travel into the city. Most buses are equipped with wifi and reclining seats.
• Insisting on Driving? You can park in the following zip codes and find limited street parking. After 5pm your chances of finding a spot are slim to none. Be aware of the parking zones as they only give you a few hours of free parking. Some zip codes close to Center City with limited free street parking are 19146, 19130, & 19147.

What is Made in America Festival in Philadelphia?

The unofficial conclusion of summer in Philadelphia revolves around Made in America festival in Philadelphia. For the past seven years, Made in America Festival has been a Philadelphia staple hosted on Philadelphia’s Ben Franklin Parkway. Produced through a collaboration by Roc Nation and Live Nation.

In 2014, Made in America Festival was hosted simultaneously in Los Angeles and Philadelphia but Philly proved to be the true home of the Made In America Festival. Los Angeles hosted an offshoot of the Festival in Grand Park. The festival was supposed to bring an economic injection of capital to the city of Los Angeles. Unfortunately, Made in America in Los Angeles failed to produce the ticket sales it hoped and had a one year run on the West Coast. This annual festival hosts some of the largest acts in music curated through the relationships of festival founder and hip-hop legend Jay-Z. This multi-genre festival hosts some of the largest names in hip-hop, R&B, EDM, and Pop music.

Cause Village is the philathrophic initiative and hub for social action. This year in 2019, Cause Village will feature art that speaks to criminal justice reform, youth development, animal rights, and more. Local artists can submit their eight foot tall sign to be displayed as the centerpiece of this art installation promoting social change.

Founded in 2012 by hip-hop superstar Jay-Z, Made in America was able to attract over 80,000 patrons on its inaugural event grossing over $5 Million in ticket sales and generating nearly $10 million in economic impact in the host city of Philadelphia. The highlight of the inaugural event was a co-performance of Jay-Z’s hit single “99 Problems” with rock legends Pearl Jam. In 2015, Made in America sold out with record-breaking crowds of 140,000 tickets sold with 64,000 of those patrons attending both days of the Made in America Festival.

Made in America Festival has expanded from three stages to five stages in 2018. Gardendale has a notoriously difficult door so make sure you come with a member or know someone that has a connection with management. Happy Hour is one of the most well-recognized drinking time frames around the world. For many, it’s considered the best couple of hours of their day. Usually, it’s tied directly to the triumphant feeling you get when you realize that the work day is, in fact, over.

Why Does Happy Hour Exist?

Most people enjoy happy hour but have no idea where the idea even began. Sometimes it’s good to learn your history, then indulge. In fact, the notion of happy hour began back in the 19th century out at sea. It was to describe the entertainment period in which activities such as boxing and wrestling matches would occur on board the naval ships. This was a time for the seamen to get their minds off the hardships of war.

During the era of prohibition in the 1920s happy hour was used as “a euphemism for drinking sessions ahead of dinner in public restaurants were serving alcohol was illegal.”

Today we look at things a little differently for happy hour, it’s quite mainstreamed and it seems like every bar in America has one.

Some people today especially during the age of the millennials, utilize happy hours as their only time to go out, it’s cheaper, most places have a great atmosphere, and it’s usually earlier right after work lets out. There are a few things people look for first when it comes to choosing their favorite happy hour spot.

1. Break up your stale week, grabbing a few cheap drinks might break up the monotony of your week.
2. Keep your everyday commuter out of the rush hour. Cities like Philadelphia can be a struggle leaving around 5pm with tens of thousands of people trying to get back home from work. Grabbing a couple of drinks while rush hour ends might just be your best bet.
3. Try new things, sometimes it’s great to be able to go to a place you’ve never been before, check out the cocktails that are on the happy hour menu, usually they’re cheaper than normal. Try to step out of your comfort zone and try new things on special.
4. Great time for bonding with friends and coworkers. Not always is there a chance to hang out with coworkers, but happy hour is one of those times where it’s easy to get everyone together for some good old fashioned fun.
